A surprising plant, found by Denis, is this Purple Toothwort near to Penns Place in Petersfield.
This parasitic plant lives on elder, poplar and willow roots. Not especially rare but not often seen growing quite so profusely as it is here in Petersfield. The What3words location is retraced.fine.chess but for those not familiar with What3words it's not to hard to find. Leaving the Rugby pitch, follow the footpath next to the River Rother upstream and keep an eye on the right hand side. There were at least 25 clumps of these extraordinary plants growing there last week. The plant has been in England since 1908 and can be cultivated, however you may need to wait 10 years before it chooses to flower. A guide to the spot is available by appointment and at a distance!
First photo is an easy one, especially if you live in Midhurst. This next one is not so easy, but will be a very familiar bend in the landscape to some, with the footpath heading for the woods further on. Taken on a walk last summer - hey, those were the days!
If all these puzzles are too much for you, here is a question, complete with an answer. NB Please don't practice at home.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Answers to last weeks puzzle - the lady on the footpath is of course Maddie. The Church is St Beuno's Church in the village of Culbone, near Porlock Weir. It is reputed to be the smallest parish church in England - well worth a visit, especiailly if you walk from Porlock Weir. The Hayling Island photo yielded no answers as to the correct name for that invasive tree - one suggestion was that it could be a bumma tree. Sadly a google search came up with quite a lot, but nothing to do with trees. Even the supplier of the photo had not a clue, which is a bit of a cheek.
There has been much discussion about what is allowed and different Police forces interpretation of the law. This document Police guidance is the National Police Chiefs' Council considered advice. It advises that driving to a walk location is OK as long as the walking time is longer than the driving time. Might be worth taking a copy with you, just in case your local policeman hasn't had time to read it! Stay safe.
This photo is from back in 2005 - one easy question, who is the young lady? More difficult - what is the name of the church? Clue - if you've been walking in north Somerset it might help. This next photo is a bit of a puzzle. It was taken on Hayling Island but there is something wrong with it - is the plant a yucca or a palm - either way, it is not native to Hayling Island. Anyone know the species please?
The first photo in the last quiz was taken in the grounds of Chichester Cathedral in 2012, a few familiar faces hiding amongst the statues. These statues were part of an exhibition by local sculptor Philip Jackson who lives in Cocking. He became a Deputy Lieutenant of West Sussex in 2008. The monkey and the waterfall photo was taken in Mill Lane, Steep. What3words:- crows.transmit.stated or SU7425 2592. Many thanks to all the people who have sent photos in. There are still some great photos yet to be published but don't let that stop anyone sending more in please. Finally a few smiles:- Half of us are going to come out of this quarantine as amazing cooks. The other half will come out with a drinking problem. (Perhaps a weight problem?). I need to practice social-distancing from the refrigerator. Still haven't decided where to go for Easter ----- The Living Room or The Bedroom. Homeschooling is going well. 2 students suspended for fighting and 1 teacher fired for drinking on the job. I don't think anyone expected that when we changed the clocks we'd go from Standard Time to the Twilight Zone. This morning I saw a neighbour talking to her cat. It was obvious she thought her cat understood her. I came into my house, told my dog..... we laughed a lot. My body has absorbed so much soap and disinfectant lately that when I pee it cleans the toilet. I'm so excited --- it's time to take out the garbage. What should I wear? Classified Ad: Single man with toilet paper seeks woman with hand sanitizer for good clean fun. Day 6 of Homeschooling: My child just said "I hope I don't have the same teacher next year".... I'm offended.
Rabbits may have a good living, nibbling grass all day, but spare them a thought at Easter! Some good things have come out of this pandemic - a 14 year old in USA wanted to keep in touch with her choir group and asked her Dad to help - here's the result The Prayer duet
