Coates Common Day/Morning Walk 7th June 2017

Isabel had planned a shortish walk on Coates Common as there were several absentees away in Somerset. The weather held up and the 4 miles were from the Lords Piece Car Park with a coffee break in Bignor Park. Thanks to Isabel and Paul for the photos.

We had escaped any serious rain during the week, one of the wettest for England this summer, but we ran out of luck late on this our last day. Starting out from Lynmouth along the valley of the East Lyn River, we passed the site of the hamlet of Middleham which was completely destroyed by the flood of 15th August 1952. Very pleasant walk up the river with plenty of birdlife. The National Trust stop at Watersmeet where the East Lyn meets the Hoaroak water seemed a good excuse to have a cup of tea and perhaps a cake or two. At this stage we coud have walked back down but jointly decided to go up to the village of Countisbury and then walk back along the coast to Lynmouth. Apart from the weather it was a good choice. Walking up through the woods was OK but as soon as we reached open ground near the top it began to rain heavily. We hoped the pub, the Blue Ball Inn, would be as helpful as the hotel in Porlock Weir but it wasn't to be, so another soaking until we reached the sanctuary of Countisbury Church. A good place for our picnic lunch and to wait for the rain to ease up. Just under an hour later the rain had stopped and we continued down to Lynmouth, eventually in bright sunshine. A splendid end to the week.

We started out from Lynton and took the Coast path to the Valley of the Rocks. We decided not to climb to the top - it looked far too busy.... The route took us  past Lee Abbey, now a Christian retreat, conference and holiday centre before climbing up to meet Lydiate Lane, the route back to Lynton. We happened to pass The Caravan Club campsite where some of us were tempted by some delicious ice-creams, which we very much deserved. Picnic lunch was taken overlooking Lynton and the Bristol Channel. Nice weather and an enjoyable walk - it was only 5.3 miles but with no shortage of hills - 1120ft gained.

Sightseeing Tuesday. We had a stroll around Dunster Park before a coffee and some shopping in the village. Then we headed for Watchet harbour for a packed lunch in a seaside shelter. It was a stormy day in the area with a tree being blown down a few miles away, but we managed to avoid any rain. Walking was about 4 miles, 600 feet gained.

Selworthy Holiday 5th June 2017

After 2 good walking days we felt a rest was needed and the plan was to walk to Porlock town, have lunch and catch the bus back. We left the house and took a leisurely stroll along to the villages of Allerford and Bossington and then to Porlock via the fields behind the sea wall. After having coffee and scones in a shop in Porlock it seemed far too early, so we carried on and walked the extra 2 miles to Porlock Weir. As we reached Porlock the heavens opened. We dared to ask the proprietors of the Millers at the Anchor Hotel if we could shelter inside and eat our sandwiches (and perhaps buy a drink!). They were most hospitable and allowed us into their lounge. It is an extraordinary hotel, crammed with antiques and curiosities  collected by the Miller family and we very much enjoyed our stay. The rain continued and we were very grateful that the bus driver took pity on us and dropped us outside Holnicote House gate, instead of the official bus stop, some 200 yards down the road.
