Denis's walk started from St Mary's Road in Liss and took us past the International Presbyterian Church of St Peters before taking the bridge over the A3. A few fields and inclines later we were at The Hawkley Inn. The food and service was excellent. Well refreshed we had the supposedly easier task of walking downhill back to our start point. However mud at the side of a road and a steep hill proved too much for one walker who came off worse for the challenge resulting in a sore head and muddy coat. Everybody was more careful after that and we finished the 6.1/4 mile walk without further injury. Great walk with nice weather and lunch.
Mary and Barbara led a walk over Chapel Common, starting from the car park adjacent to Rake Firs. After a hop over the old A3, we walked to Milland Church. However we chose to go into the adjacent Tuxlith Chapel dating from the 13th century. Splendid building, well worth a visit. We then went back to the main road to get onto Chapel Commom and to head for Ripsley Farm. The path goes under the main Portsmouth to Waterloo line, which was high above us on an embankment. This area was seriously damaged by the excessive rain that fell during the Christmas of 2013, closing the line for many days. We stopped for coffee at the entrance to the Liphook Equine Hospital (currently looking for a night nurse!) before tackling some marshy ground further on. Having survived the experience we found a large area of emerging snowdrops, so spring must be on the way! Then on to the railway bridge at Langley and eventually Langley Wood and our car park. Excellent lunch at the Jolly Drover - the walk was just over 4.1/2 miles.
Pauline's walk, with help from Jean, was very enjoyable in spite of the temperature being barely above freezing. To compensate the sun seemed to shine all day and the walk along the Chichester Channel from Birdham to Itchenor and back was full of interest. We had plenty of wildlife and magnificent views across the water, with a very good lunch in The Ship in Itchenor, enjoyed by all - even though we had nearly all over indulged in homemade shortbread biscuits during the morning coffee break! The walk was about 6.1/2 miles in total.
It was very white and frosty morning leaving Midhurst but apart from frozen puddles, no sign of frost for Pauline's walk at Dell Quay. Leaving the pub car park we headed towards Birdham by taking a path next to the Chichester Channel. After a stroll around the yachts and houseboats in the Marina we stopped for coffee with some electing to use the Boathouse Cafe. The return journey was more inland but this was effectively completing the circumnavigation of the WWII Appledrum Airfield, in use from June 1943 until June 1944. After 4.1/2 miles we were back to the Crown and Anchor for an excellent lunch. Thank you Pauline for the photos and a great walk.
Linda, June and Maddie led a walk around Midhurst with numbers depleted with holidays and another member suffering from the effects of a nasty fall. In fairly damp conditions the walk went up to Easebourne cross roads before taking to the footpaths to reach Hollist Common and then to drop down to the New Lipchis Way, following the River Rother to Woolbeding Bridge. This historically important and relatively unspoilt medieval bridge had an original road surface of sand and gravel, this being replaced with cobbles around 1625. Refreshments awaited in Gartons Coffee House in Midhurst Town square and at this point it was decided to call it a day as the weather showed no sign of improving. Many thanks to Isabel and Pauline for the excellent photos.
